What Must Be on Labels for Nutraceuticals

Label Solutions provides labels for many industries and companies. We specialize in nutraceuticals and supplement labels, especially since the supplement industry continues to grow. As many as 76% of Americans take some form of dietary supplement every year! Label Solutions explains the regulatory compliance necessary for nutraceuticals and supplement labels.

Background

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulates what can and cannot appear on dietary supplement and nutraceutical labels. Dietary supplements provide some nutritional benefit to the human body, but they aren’t consumed as food. Nutraceuticals are defined as food containing health-giving additives while having a medicinal benefit.

For example, fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids is a food that may have medicinal benefits through a nutrient found in that food. The FDA began regulating supplement labels in 1994, and Label Solutions knows the laws and requirements needed for this labeling.

Required Statements

Because nutraceuticals are dietary supplements, they face the same types of regulations as supplement labels.

The FDA requires these five statements on every label for supplements:

  1. Name of the dietary supplement
  2. Amount of dietary supplement in the container
  3. Nutrition labeling
  4. Ingredient list
  5. Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

Let’s say you own Acme Supplements. You want to market high-potency vitamin C tablets that provide 500% of a person’s daily supply of vitamin C per serving. Your bottle contains four months’ worth of the product. Supplement labels for this product must include:

  1. Super C Dietary Supplement
  2. 120 tablets per container
  3. Serving size of one 200-mg tablet with 500% of daily vitamin C
  4. Each tablet contains pure vitamin C as ascorbic acid
  5. Acme Supplements, 123 Main Street, Anywhere, State, 12345

Clearly Marked

In addition to these statements, your supplement labels must be clearly marked and stay affixed to the container. Otherwise, you can’t sell or market your nutraceuticals or dietary supplements. Containers without labels or verbiage that can’t be read are a waste of resources. Label Solutions helps ensure your products are sellable thanks in part to high-quality labels that resist smudging and stay on your product containers.
